Security Facts
Every 15 Seconds Another Home Falls Victim!
By far the most common threat the average person faces is home burglary. According to the FBI, a burglary occurs somewhere in the United States every 15.4 seconds. By definition, burglary is a non-confrontational property crime occurring when the owner isn't at home. However, know your home security facts… becoming a burglary victim almost always leaves a family feeling vulnerable and personally violated.
Committed most often by young males less than 25 years of age, these criminals are looking for items that are small, expensive and easily converted to cash.
Favorites are cash, jewelry, guns, watches laptop computers and other small electronic devices. Statistically, 70% of the burglars use some amount of force to enter a dwelling, but their preference is gaining easy access without drawing attention to themselves.
Almost 90% of Burglaries Go Unsolved!
Here's the sad fact: Burglars continue to flourish because police can only clear about 13% of all reported burglaries - and rarely catch a thief in the act. It's a case of "We're sorry, just fill out the report and file an insurance claim."
Even if your case is eventually solved and the burglar caught and convicted, actually getting your property back is a long shot – at best.
Although home burglaries may seem random, they actually involve a straightforward selection process. Choose an unoccupied home with the easiest access, the greatest amount of cover and the best escape routes.
Don't Be an Easy Target
A homeowner's only option is to remove any opportunities for a burglar to have an easy target. One of the greatest deterrents is noise or other attention grabbing actions. Once a burglar senses his cover is gone, he'll move on from your home and look for a more inviting (and less threatening) target.
However, only about 30% of private homes & apartments actually have security systems, and many of those may not even work correctly. We hope that these home security facts can help you and your family stays safe during these uncertain times!
